Tragic End for Two Former New England College Athletes in Miami Murder-Suicide

In a sorrowful turn of events, the New England College community is grieving the loss of two of its recent graduates, Sidney Capolino and Meghan Moore. The two women, both former student-athletes, were victims of a murder-suicide that took place in Miami, Florida.

The Incident

On a fateful Saturday night, at approximately 8:53 p.m., the Miami-Dade Police Department responded to an emergency at an apartment building on West 40th Street, where Capolino and Moore resided. Upon arrival, they discovered Meghan Moore, 25, injured outside her apartment. Tragically, as officers were attempting to assist her, another gunshot was heard from within the apartment, leading to an immediate evacuation of the building.

A SWAT team eventually entered the apartment, where they found two additional people fatally shot: Sidney Capolino, 23, Meghan Moore’s roommate, and Luis Napoles, 40, who was identified as Moore’s boyfriend and the suspected perpetrator of the murder-suicide.

Remembering the Victims

Sidney Capolino, hailing from Pawling, New York, and Meghan Moore, from Centerville, Massachusetts, were both alumni of New England College. Capolino graduated in 2022, whereas Moore graduated a year earlier in 2021. Both were known for their involvement in college life as members of the women’s ice hockey team, a testament to their athletic prowess and team spirit.

The loss has deeply affected the college, with President Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance, Jr. expressing profound sadness and extending thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of both women. In his message to the college community, Dr. Lesperance highlighted the importance of coming together to support one another during this difficult time. The NEC Wellness Center has offered counseling services to those in need, emphasizing the college’s readiness to assist its members, even during Spring Break.

A Community in Shock
