The incident involved former U.S. Army Captain Harry Hardman, who has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of animal cruelty. On that fateful Monday afternoon, around 3 p.m., Apex police officers were dispatched to the area of Brussels Drive at Chipping Drive in response to a disturbance call.

As they were en route, the situation escalated, and shots were fired. The victims of this tragic incident were identified as Gabrielle Raymond, 37, and Nancy Taylor, 69. Both women resided in the South Walk Townhomes where the shooting took place.

The specifics of the events leading up to the shooting are still being investigated. However, it is known that Taylor approached Hardman and engaged in a conversation with him.

The nature of their conversation remains unknown at this time. Raymond later joined the conversation, and it was during this interaction that Hardman allegedly pulled out a gun and shot both women. Neighbors in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots and promptly called 911.

The Arrest of Harry Hardman

Shortly after the shooting, Apex police officers arrived at the scene, where they witnessed Hardman retreating into his home. They swiftly established a perimeter around the home. Hardman then exited the back door with an AR-15 rifle and was instructed to drop the weapon, which he did before being taken into custody

Hardman faces charges of murder and animal cruelty, and was booked into Wake County Jail on two counts of murder and one count of animal cruelty

Tom McKay, a Lee County deputy who was off duty at the time of the shooting, witnessed the events unfold a few houses down. He provided insights into Hardman’s behavior, stating that he “We definitely know who that guy is … he’s just a little bit off,” McKay said. “He lives alone, just kind of weird, I guess, he was often, in my opinion, kind of just, strong emotions, you know laughing but could also get angry.”

This tragic incident has had a significant impact on the community, with the mayor Jacques Gilbert, expressing condolences and gratitude for the first responders who courageously responded to the scene.
